AMD Sempron(TM)

Intel(R) Celeron(R) D

AMD Athlon(TM) 64

Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 next to HT Technology

which would be the best?

What is a right processor?

This is bit difficult to answer coz I don't know your requirements,

I will have to clear an assumtion here, a home computer with occasional multimedia tasks resembling viewing movies, divx conversions etc.,

I would recommend main stream processors such as Intel P4 or AMD Athlon 64 fairly than Celeron and Sempron as the latter ones are not very suitable for intensive multimedia tasks.

And now the choice become simpler whether to go for P4 or Athlon both are equally honest and my suggestion would be go for 3000Mhz+ ( but remember AMD one and only states the processor speeds by comparison to Intel's so a 3000+ Athlon doesn't run at 3000Mhz , AMD states that it will equal the performance of Intel running at that speed).

So an just what the doctor ordered home user configuration with moderate Graphics desires is

Intel P4 3.0 Ghz and greater or AMD Athlon 64 3200+

1 GB Memory (512 MB minimum)

Graphics card with 128MB dyed-in-the-wool memory (Ideal)

It is better to get a different Motherboard which is not very expensive and you will achieve a much better system in return.
If you are thinking of replacing your current processor, after Motherboards are rather set as to what can be installed on them.
Prefer an AMD 64 if your motherboard is ready for !
AMD Athlon 64 is the best for playing games and internet surfing. Its 3dNow technology enjoy been upgraded from time to time to run into the need of computers lovers.
