Ok, for $500, you arent going to get anything clothed from a store.
This is the best you can get if you build it yourself and receive the parts from newegg, which has one of the best reputations, and probably the best prices.

1gb kingston ddr2 667
250gb SATA 2 HDD
ASUS motherboard near pci-x and SATA 2 jacks.
You can get window media edition rotten ebay for about $80
That totals to nearly $550
This setup will run any modern games and can be upgraded to AMD's fastest dual core cpu's, the fastest DDR2, and up to 1000gb of hard drive space.
Not to mention that it can pinch the Nvidia 8800, the most powerful graphics card out there.
You can probably bring a dell for $500, but don't expect it to be a racecar.
