A laptop might be a better choice for a college student so you can appropriate it with you to the library, classes, and if you jump home for a weekend you can take it home if you involve to work on homework. Most colleges have wireless internet access, so you could also use the laptop within the student union, not to mention you can pinch it to other peoples rooms to work on stuff in groups.
I have an HP Pavilion and loved it. Still have it after 3 years, it works great.
