What could be some cause for computer games to run slow for first 5 minutes consequently speed up to average?

I only just purchased new computer system: AMD dual core 2.4 Ghz, 1 see ddr2 800 ram, XFX 256 mb PCI xpress. When playing big end games such as Battlefield 2 and 2142 the winter sport is choppy for first 5 mins. I have everything on extreme video settings and it plays perfect after those 5 min. Is it i dont own enough run into or my hard drive loading the map? Hard drive is a SATA 3.0 Gbit 7200 rpm. Thanks
